First wood on the table for a VRmod is Velvet Mesquite Burl that I have 3 burl caps of from Arizona. Another wood that I am thinking about using is more local to V having come from sawyer friends in Tasmania. It's Lophozonia cunninghamii, and goes by many common names. Among them Pinkwood Burl, Tasmanian Myrtle (commonly in the wood industry) and Rose Myrtle. An example of the misnomer of common names... Myrtlewood is in the Myrtaceae family, this is actually a Southern Beech (Nothofagaceae), and they are not even related to each other at the higher Order level of classification. I have 3 blocks of it left that I could cut up and pick a mod block from. Finished al la naturale to bring out the depth of the color, grain and figure that varies throughout these ought to make for a nice VRmod.

I am thinking #3 (the last one) has a tight enough figure that it would be well displayed on a small mod.

What's on the surface exposed on some burl or otherwise sawed woods and what's inside them can vary considerably in figure and color contrast. Part of the fun of crafting woods is trying to figure out where to make cuts for the best a block has to offer. That is something that only gets somewhat easier from understanding how it grew and long T&E experience cutting them to confirm your speculations. IOW, some woods that look stellar on the surface may be less than that to even just Plain Jane inside. So you take a chance when paying dearly for outward appearance only on wood species that you are not very familiar with. But being the first person to ever see what treasures were hidden inside is always special if you love fine woods.

All three blocks have features that would work fine in mod size blocks.

Last one for awhile and to get off the Tasmanian wood porn now that CloudFlare London or San Francisco is letting ECF refresh again.

My first choice in Taz wood would be from blocks I have that I wouldn't be able to get past NZ customs without some fairly demanding pre-ship work that I no longer have the health, equipment or supplies for. But after that work it would pass customs, and it would be easy wood for V to work with that would make an exceptional VRmod IMO.

Hi spydro, will come back with your questions tonight, but for this wood the way past customs is to simply put a layer of epoxy over the outside, it will all be taken out in the making, and if the voids are filled on the outside customs will treat it as finished wood, with no issue. Lovely selection by the way!
