So, I'm working on modding a VTR to a dna 30. I received a few messages about this. My plan is to use all the original buttons. The VTR is completely stripped of electronics and this is my observations so far...

You will have to do alot of dremeling to fit the dna in the VTR. the dna board is much longer than the VTR board. Also if you are wanting to use the top spinning control for your wattage you will have to purchase one of these:

CTS 10K Ohm Adjustment Single Linear Rotary Taper Potentiometer 15 Pcs - Electrical Outlet Switches - Amazon.com

The one inside the VTR now is imbedded around the VTR board and will be unusable.

I would recommend changing out the 510 connection also, if yours is the spinning version currently to this:

Also I'm going to add a usb connection right under the 510 out the side to charge.

In order to use the same display location and buttons as the VTR it will be very hard to still use a 18650 battery, due to the size of the dna board and height of the 18650 battery. I'm going to install two 18350 efest purple batteries instead giving me 1400mah and plenty of amps.

I will be posting pics of progress on this thread in the next couple days...

Oh almost missed this thread, very interesting and good luck! I'll do this too eventually. But I just finished dremeling off the ring and that took me long enough.

One thing I thought about is the rotary encoder. An alternative might be not to have it rotate, but just be able to turn it a bit to the left and right and stop there. You could use "hold + and fire button" functions of the DNA then. Not sure if that is necessary though.

EDIT: Just in case you are unaware of this but someone put a DNA20 chip in the VTR here. Aparently he placed the board in the space behind the fire button.

PS: Apparently you can just use an analog potentiometer for setting the watts on a VTR. I think this would be far better than buttons.

Sorry to keep spamming this thread lol but just looking for some feedback. I too want to mod my VTR into a VTR30. I am planning now to use a normal potentiometer to use as analog input for changing wattage. Less complicated than the rotary encoder and you could probably change wattage faster. I still haven't opened my VTR up yet but I guess I just have to fit the potentiometer to where the rotary encoder was?
