Monetary gain doesn't have to be money.. it can be anything, if I'm not mistaken, including popularity and the like. I know that anything posted on the Internet (or written/drawn/etc on a piece of paper etc) is automatically copyrited and if you can prove someone used it they can be prosecuted...

I think the price is so miniscule that it doesn't affect the company. I'm sure that some company would keep it that way even if the others changed it and then they'd be less likely to make money off it. niquid, that's a new one =) and a good one
