Placed a little magnet on top of the battery to create a button top and it fired right up, so now I know the problem is with it not making contact with that post, and not the batteries. Scared to mess with anything, but obviously the best choice is to try removing the gasket and reapply it so...

Turns out that the gasket where the battery makes contact is maybe to thick, and the post does not stick up enough. It is also placed way off centre, with one side almost up against the post, which also makes it more difficult for a flat top 18350 to make contact. Can that post be pulled up...
