Usually requires a bit more work than that to get proper air flow through the tank. For instance, the coil on the right is a much modified ECR coil (unmodified on the left).

For the Melo III tank, I bought these to try. They are easily rebuildable if you can rebuild an EVOD/ProTank or eGo CLR coil, as they are of similar design and you don't need to muck around with small screws.
The only difference between your system as you describe it and mine could be that I have removed the AFC ring completely, allowing maximum air flow. If that doesn't help I'm afraid I don't have anything else to suggest.
