Yes, tension the wire during wrapping the coil around a former; I use a machine screw for this. The advantage is the coil retaining it's geometry indefinitely. Of course, you can't "hot" dry burn the coil else you will stress relieve it (anneal it), losing any advantage.

Probably, but that's not the reason I use them ;) And with rayon as the wick, and with very thin tails extending down the tank can be wicked completely empty. Eggcellent :)

What hot spots? There isn't any with a spaced coil.
A thing to note: all the major manufacturers premade coils (blister pack) are spaced (BVCs may be an exception)
Sometime back, we were discussing the Pico tank? Mine arrived and I have been using it solely with the CLR adaptor and std CLR 1.0ohm coil. It's okay like that, but you can't use the full capacity of the tank without a lot of tipping to keep the wicks wet.
