I have always had more faith in micrometers, but I don't know of anyone who has micrometers up to 24 inches.
I used to be a machinist - back when the earth was much younger.
ETA: That was so long ago that I have never seen calipers with batteries.

I've got a Toyota Corolla. Used to be easy entry. Something has changed, and it has to be ME. It's a struggle to get my right leg under the steering wheel.
My sister had to have fluid drawn from a knee. The first attempt yielded the worst scream I've ever heard. A different doctor had to come in and complete the job. It went well, with not even a whimper.
