It last for months and can be dry burned in the coil to clean it or when switching flavors. This also means the occasional dry burn does end with a lung full of burnt cotton. RxW gives you warning with a change in flavor if you've forgotten to squonk. There are two long threads over in Reoville...
The art of wicking.
What kind of wick will you be using? I would say the biggest mistake new wickers make is installing too much wick. You want it to be able to move it inside the coil and not have it packed tight, this will allow it to expand with juice and not choke the coils flow.

Build close to the ohms you're currently used to maybe a bit higher as these hit harder, I run 1.2 ohm single coils, wrapped on either 1/16 or #38 bits. Pay attention to the height of the air hole, you want the coil even with it.
Only time I've had a weird taste was from used mod that run some funky juice. But that would be all the time not just after chain vaping for a while, plus the process of dripping slows you down to let the coils cool. The tube, bottle, o ring in the cap are all easy to clean or replace.
