Found it. Turns out not all alert preferences are in alert preferences settings. When on the list of watched forums, put a check mark in the box for the target forum, the drop down at the bottom has a choice for disable alerts.
Now hopefully I'll still get alerts when someone quotes or tags me.
No not watching the thread and have unclicked alert to replies in watched threads. The poster is not in my friends list either. The sub-forum is watched but that should not mean I want alerts to every post that happens in it. Especially when I unclick alert to replies in watched threads.

Yes they work the same and take the same batteries, bottles and RBAs. My guess is several things went into Rob's decision for a side button, but only he truly knows.
