    Make sure what you got is a mini 2.1. Otherwise, you'll need 14500 batteries, not the 18490's. But again, you can't go wrong with the AW IMR's (button top). All the REOs were designed around the button tops, and for years, the AW IMR's have been considered the best/safest batteries to use...

    If you didn't already, you might try cleaning/replacing the o-ring in the bottle cap. Overbearing juices love to hide up under there too.

    I'd be more inclined to suspect that the broken gasket resulted in an unplanned circuit (short), that allowed the battery to discharge rapidly, although not rapidly enough to over heat the spring and cause it to sag. Just my guess, I'm no expert on 'lectrical stuff.

    Just in case you aren't already aware of it, if you bend out a leg of a paper clip and slip it in the bottle before you insert the funnel, it will keep the funnel from sealing against the bottle, and help avoid some spillage.
