    Thanks for all of your responses. I never pulled the plug by the cord, but I did plug and unplug the unit frequently. I'll take the advice offered by most of you to use a power strip in the future!

    What to use as a make shift battery spacer?

    The "flat positive side" to which you refer is really the negative side, which is truly flat. The positive side has a small round bump in the middle. Perhaps if you turn your battery upside down it will work. I hope this helps, and that I understood your description properly. Good luck.
