Really not too many restrictions on battery/power sources besides imagination. The biggest limitation is simply making sure the power source can support the amperage required to power our devices effectively. For batteries this is ofted referred to or defined as "C" rating or discharge rating...
Something like this should be available at a local hobby store for heating wire. Nichrome.

Silica rope can be found as fireplace door gasket material.
Most of my new cotton wick flavor issues came from whatever i had handled just before making the wick. Cotton being so absorbant will pull everything from your fingertips while coiling. Had one start with a soap flavor because i did not rinse my hands well enough. The point? Only handle cotton...
There may be other alternatives but a quick search got these:
Resinlab SEC1233 Electrically Conductive Epoxy Adhesive Silver Filled 4 g Packet
Silver Epoxy 2/Part 50 gram kit 40-3900 > Silver Epoxy and Silver Paint > Electronic Chemicals > Main Section > SRA Soldering Products
Coil uniformity made a big difference for me. I now wrap my coils around a 16ga syringe needle; remove the coil annd use the largest eyed tapestry needle that will fit to thread my wick through the coil. No worry about constricting the wick or uneven coils.
The usb converter would definitely be the weak link. 2a is not enough for two passthrough devices to be used at the same time. That battery should easily last a week even with 3-4 passthroughs attached.
Getting about 3 days from my cotton wicks before they gunk up enough to drop performance. Cheap enough that i dont even bother trying to save the coil. I have 4 rca/phono jack atties made up and just spend 30-45l mins a week rebuilding the two or so that are not performing.
Machining a single piece of metal without a lathe will be quite difficult. Suggest you read this thread for building a genesis with minimal tools:

My first genesis is made from aluminum. It has had liquid in it for over a month with no discoloration/deterioration of either the juice or the metal in contact with it.
Dummy me. Only had 10k resistor so in my infinite wisdom i put two together thinking that would be 20k. However they were soldered parallel not in series.
Will try a 47k later.
Try wrapping a single layer of mesh around the lower portion of the wick leaving enough bare cotton at the top to wrap the coil on. This should ggive you enough ridgidity to make the wick much easier to insert/remove.
Vaping like a champ but still not right. Think i may have a problem with my mosfet not passing full current.
batt v. No load:4.1
Batt v. With 2.0 ohm atty:3.8
V.in to mosfet same load:: 3.78
V.out from mosfet 3.12
Is my mosfet fried?
Atty connector shows 4.99v no load but drops below battery...
A tank is just a tube placed around a standard carto to allow it to hold more juice. Since the positive is isolated inside the carto it would not be practal to put an led inside a tank. However it would be possible to use the tutorial you found to put an led in the clearomizer then put the the...
aside from the higher temperature tolerance (which increases durability, a good thing); some have said it gives better flavor, sometimes noticing a metallic taste from nichrome but not from the equivelent size of kanthal.
from the pics, I agree with Asdaq. looks like the air inlet is too high, almost passing over the top of the coil instead of near the base of the coil. Try moving the coil a little higher on the wick so airflow is directed at the lowest coil.
