    Looks pretty good from here. Did you add any salt, vinegar, or dish soap to the dye? I use salt and vinegar, it seems to stabilize the color and help in absorption. I tried the dish soap once, but it didn't seem to help.

    I've been doing Rit Dye and about 10 coats of acrylic sealant. I get great colors and the acrylic does a fine job. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with the aluminum yet; barring I don't win the finish contest :)

    I did it the same way, except I used two small flat tip screwdrivers on the bottom to pry up without marking up the finish, then pried down from the top after the "bump" was cleared on the bottom.
