    Yeah you could always pick up a powered hub, and if that doesn't do the trick, just return it. For example I looked at the Dlink powered hub and it gives 1.2A per plug.

    I did some final edits after some math and I think it might be how the bus powers your usb ports on the laptop. I am reading they can power 100-500mA only. That would not be enough. Try a powered hub, and yes don't keep attempting the laptop, you don't want to burn out those expensive cartos!
