Like so many others... I took the dive!
I use a protank on my Provari and I have not had any "popping" sounds at all with it. I did have some of those issues with my Lava V2 and my protank, but those problems went away once I bought a really nice battery for my lava tube which fixed all my lavatube issues that I had. If your protank... -

Peppermint Blast 60/40 12 mg in a Protank I gobbled this harder than a turkey! Not a big fan of the button
The button on the Provari is actually one of my favorite things about it. At first I was missing the click and it drove me crazy for a couple of hours. Then I started getting use to it. Now that I have been using it for a little while, I love the fact that it does not click. My only suggestion... -

Ordering today
