    Your first coil looked pretty damn good to me, just too much cotton. It takes some trial and error to get the amount just right - the "shoulders" in your first pic are a dead giveaway it was over packed. For me, a tiny wisp of cotton and more frequent squonking works best. That being said...

    Short answer: less wraps or lower gauge wire. Either try an 8 wrap 30awg coil or get your hands on some 28awg kanthal. Should do the trick. Nice looking coil though :)
