    Colorado man sues after explosion

If that were an absolute parallel, you'd have a point - but it isn't. In your example, it's known for certain that the alternative to the proper round will explode the barrel of the gun. In the situation under discussion, we don't know what, if any, combination of cells and usage pattern is...

    Colorado man sues after explosion

I think we have a definite division of opinion here. Some folks want their "safety" handed to them on a plate - these are the folks who re not prepared to accept responsibility for their own safety, in my view. They buy their cars based on airbags and seat belts and use bactericides all over...

    Colorado man sues after explosion

I don't, but I feel that A: it's being blown out of proportion, B: some of the reasoning behind certain recommendations (and the initial thrust of the posts on the Safety Spec) is not based in sound science or statistical analysis and C: that much of the language being used actually provides...

    Colorado man sues after explosion

I might be being a tad pedantic here, but on what basis do you conclude that with absolute certainty is more frequent than 1 in 20,000 units? What figures do you have that would allow that conclusion to be drawn? Again, it's entirely possible to state that 20,000 tube mods have been sold, and...

    Colorado man sues after explosion

If it was correct, it would only just be significant in statistical terms (1), but I'm afraid that there's an error in your reasoning. I'm assuming that your "confirmed" 1 in 3,000 is brought about because the manufacturer of said device has 3,000 devices out there and one has failed. I'm also...

    Colorado man sues after explosion

I wonder whether the complainant's lawyers will call the authors of the ECF Mod Safety Specs as "expert witnesses" seeing as how they do seem to have made the case against Puresmoker - it's almost certain that that, and threads on it, will not have escaped their notice.

Regarding ECF Safety Specification For Metal Tube Mods

You see, this is where VTTV more or less came in. Our take on it was that, when we were reviewing mods, it might be a service to the viewer to be able to show what would happen to that mod in thermal runaway conditions - or at least, how it would cope with a series of faults (dead shorted atties...

Regarding ECF Safety Specification For Metal Tube Mods

If ECF is insisting on a minimum spec of "safety measures" then, surely, ECF should have the test data to back them up - and not just the theory. That rather requires that ECF can demonstrate the efficacy of its specs, else, should a mod maker adhere to the specs religiously, and it all still...

Regarding ECF Safety Specification For Metal Tube Mods

I think we're finally getting towards the crux of the matter. The fault doesn't lie with the mod maker any more than it lies with a car manufacturer in the situation where you put the wrong fuel in the tank. Expecting a manufacturer to butcher a design in order to take account of...

Regarding ECF Safety Specification For Metal Tube Mods

From my own standpoint, I am less interested in batteries venting under charge than I am with failure under "stick it in your mouth and press the button" conditions. Both Garry and I know that it's eminently possible to cause rapid disassembly in charge conditions - what we're trying to find out...

Regarding ECF Safety Specification For Metal Tube Mods

Quite the reverse - our aim is specifically to get batteries to blow - we want to know how to repeatably and reliably cause them to go bang. So far, taking batteries more or less at random, we haven't managed it - but we'll keep on going until we do find a way to make it happen at will. Think...

Regarding ECF Safety Specification For Metal Tube Mods

Well, now. Take two unprotected 3v 18340 batteries. Over-discharge one down to 0.4 volts, and then jump-start it and overcharge it by a volt, while the other one gets overcharged and has a flaw in its wrap. Stick them in a mod that has a straight short... Tin Your Tip shows the rest...

Regarding ECF Safety Specification For Metal Tube Mods

I think what's interesting about the show last night is that it actually wasn't spectacular - no booms, no bangs, no explosions, from a mod that, if we're to believe what we're told, was a racing certainty to take out half the neighbourhood four milliseconds after it got powered up.

Regarding ECF Safety Specification For Metal Tube Mods

On tonight's Tin Your Tip, Garry Dibley took a mod in failure mode, put in two batteries it wasn't supposed to take, stacked, and tried to make it blow up. Did he succeed?? You'll have to watch to find out! Tin Your Tip
