The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

Try removing a wrap or two to bring the Ω down to under 2.0, and try it at between 9-10 watts. You might also be running too-high gauge wire (looks pretty big). Like Zippersnapper said; If you have 30 ga, give that a shot...Kanthal ribbon is even better (I use .5 X .1mm & it produces all the...

The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

Yep...it's a hard plastic (probably Delrin), but it seals the top deck. Mine hasn't leaked either...I was just wondering if some of the RSSTs were sent out without this piece. There's a recess in the top deck to accept the seal, but if its missing, the bottom of the positive post spring fits...

The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

Interesting..... Here's the part I was referring to: (Sorry, I didn't want to take it apart, its running so well, but you can see that it seals the top of the deck) It might be possible that they were missing from your RSST when shipped. It looks just like the one they use on the AGA-T2, if...

The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

Just curious; you guys that have leaking problems with the RSST....are you missing the white seal under the main positive post? If its not there, you will definitely get some leakage. Mine came with one under the positive post spring where it goes into the top deck....is it possible yours did...

The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

Nope...mine has been completely leak-free. Since the tank is completely enclosed, I'd check the top seal to make sure you haven't got some crud between the seal and the top of the tank....that's about the only place the juice could come from. BTW... have you tried a couple of wraps of some...

The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

Looks good. It takes about a tankful or so for the wick to break in before the flavors really shine, but you should notice them improving as you go. BTW... I would recommend removing the fill-hole stopper, at least during the break-in process. You want the wick to remain as saturated as...

    fc-2000 porous ceramic wick

Jury seems to still be out on what works best, but here's the Readers Digest version: I think most of the trials with the different shaped wicks seem to be coming to the same conclusion: The ceramics definitely wick, the shape & configuration don't have a lot to do with it. Some appear to work...

    fc-2000 porous ceramic wick

OK...another Franken-Wick concept. I seem to be going in the opposite direction than some, but here's what I'm playing with right now. The 5mm wick has been working fine in the RSST, but I didn't like two things. One; trying to get the Ohms down to below 2.0 Ohms and still having enough wraps...

    fc-2000 porous ceramic wick

Welcome to the nightmare.... :-x I think I went through about a half-dozen wicks before I got the hang of it....and yep, most of them broke either when I was doing the "last finishing touches", or when I had finished everything, had it mounted up, and was doing the final snug-up of the coil on...

The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

Not ideal, but Yep, a candle should work, but it will be pretty slow. You can use anything that will get the wire to the point where it's glowing when you wrap it on the wick , but it would be a real challenge to wrap correctly because it cools so fast. The torch helps a great deal because it...

The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

Yep...looks like he ran into the same thing many of us have noticed: you have to start the ceramics off at lower voltage/wattage at first during the break-in period, otherwise they taste pretty funky. I usually start a new wick at about 3.3 volts & as it's breaking in, I start increasing the...

    fc-2000 porous ceramic wick

That's a great idea. The only issue is that it makes the wick even more prone to snapping than they already are. I accomplished the same thing originally with my 1/8 in fishsticks by lightly carving three shallow slots with my diamond wheel in the same area as your "hourglass" after I fitted...

The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

Looks interesting. What gauge wire are you using, and what are Ohm ratings on that tiny coil? Have you had a chance to try it yet? Inquiring minds want to know....:p

    fc-2000 porous ceramic wick

Fist off - make sure you leave the fill-hole in the tank open (at least at first) & give it a little time. Most of us have found that the ceramics need about a tankful or so of juice until they start wicking at optimum levels. You will probably notice that the flavors are a bit muted at first...

    fc-2000 porous ceramic wick

Interesting article, but I think some of their concerns are misguided. If you've followed Dan's research (and others), yes, some of the air-stones that were considered initially were definitely not suitable for our purposes... just subjecting them to a flame confirmed the fact that they were...

The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

I was looking into that for a while, but I couldn't find any form of ceramic rope that wasn't re-enforced with fiberglass....a major no-no to use in our application. I kind of put it on the back burner myself, but it would be nice to find something that would work. It would save a lot of time...

The Next Big thing.... Porous Ceramic Wicks

That's actually on my list of things to try down the road....I've ordered two more RSSTs because they are a really nice RBA for the buck and so flexible in the way you can set them up. There are a few more ideas I want to try with wick configurations, but I don't want to keep tearing down the...
