what do you use to oxidize your SS mesh?

Is it always where the top coil comes from the positive post? A good tip is to always wrap the wire to the right hand side of the post (as you're looking from the direction of the wick). If you put it to the left, as you tighten the top nut it pulls the wire tighter on the wick which cuts...

    Cheap genesis style tank...interesting!

Like I said earlier I searched on Matweb which I think is a fairly extensive database of materials and I have found 1 grade (out of over 1600 including ferritic types) of stainless steel which reportedly contains lead - a type called Sandvik 2002 which a ferritic stainless steel containing 0.2%...

    Cheap genesis style tank...interesting!

Does stainless contain lead? I searched on Matweb and couldn't find any stainless steel grades that contain lead. Brass does often contain lead though and I believe some of the cheap rebuildables are made of plated brass. I got one of the Bulli copies (just to see what they were like) which...

    OK Battery time.

Bit late in the day but totally agree with WillyB, there is some junk out there. To me it seems there's an inverse correlation between claimed capacity on cheap batteries and quality. In other words the more outlandish the claimed capacity, the worse they are likely to be. The Ultrafire...

How do you check the voltage on an Ego battery?

Some multimeters have a "peak hold" mode. On mine it's a small button in the middle of the selector dial.

How do you check the voltage on an Ego battery?

A third hand would help yes :)

How do you check the voltage on an Ego battery?

You need to press the button to activate the battery, and put the positive probe to the middle of the battery connector, and the negative probe to any bare metal on the body (like the outside of the connector) while simulataneously reading the meter. It can be tricky :p Note Joye eGo's have a...

Man am I snakebit. Had two batteries die. Advice on what may be happening? Help.

On standard 510 battery connectors the centre pin (positive) is mounted in a piece of silicone that isolates it from the rest of the connector (the outer part of the connector is the negative). If you look at a connector you'll see a whitish or black material sandwiched underneath the central...

    Another Kanthal wire resistance thread

Is this kind of what you meant in the original question? (yes I have too much time on my hands  )

    Panasonic NCR18650A, Panasonic CGR18650CH

Panasonic cells, like the NCR18650A 3100mah are generally very good. However you have to bare in mind these are unprotected cells, made by Panasonic mainly for use in battery packs, rather than for sale to the average consumer. The CGR's are a "safer" chemistry but I'm not sure how a NCR18650A...

    ECITA responds to Christina Gratziou

It's a well balanced piece, with evidence that the journalist has researched the subject and has tried to include different viewpoints. It lets the reader make up their own mind rather than attempting to force a one sided agenda down the readers throat. Now if only they could all do that :)...

    Got the new DID today

In my case 4 turns of 32AWG Kanthal A1 comes out at around 2.2 ohms every time. I find this a bit high for straight battery power but it works well enough with a Kick (don't have a Provari). I go for 3 turns (1.6 ohms roughly) if I want to run it straight from an IMR battery. BTW, I don't...

Help, Hot Spot won't go away

A few things for the OP to try out then :) I suggested that as a possible issue, as I used to often have the top coil lighting up like that on my DID and it was usually because when I tightened the top nut it would pull the wire tighter. Once I'd worked that out I haven't had many problems since.

Help, Hot Spot won't go away

Try putting less tension on the wire between the wick and the positive terminal. That looks like it's pulled tight - and that will cut into the oxidised layer and cause the wire to short on the bare stainless underneath.

    An alternative to Non-resistance wire

I think you might have misunderstood. Certain atties (mainly GG atties) use non resistance silver or nickel wire joined to a length of standard resistance wire (nichrome or kanthal) to make a complete coil assembly. The atties have terminals that are some way from the coil, so the non...

Share your wick and coil setups for your Reo!

I tried a hybrid wick. But I've gone back to a standard wick setup for the moment. It works but it was very prone to flooding I found. Perhaps there's better ways of doing it?

REO Family Photos & Storage Ideas III

Hope you enjoy Alice :) The ERA like all rebuildables has a lot of scope for tweaks. I know you can do dual coils and things with them but that seemed very fiddly to me. The pictured setup was the first ever one I did and was a bit of a rushed job. I find it works a bit better with the wick...
