    Every coil I make burns red hot

    That is strange, that the coil wire became so brittle. I use a lighter to anneal the coil wire, heat to red move on up the wire. It is done to take some of the spring out of the wire to make it easier to wrap onto the wick and wire terminals. I suppose one could try it without lightly burning...
