Get some nice red and black drum and specs as well. the red in the pic was 24 in a bit small IMO the drum over 3ft the Gars we have pulled them out 8ft well over 100lbs.
The easy way to catch them is with nylon rope it tangles in the snout and teeth then you just drag them in. It is much more of a fight and skill to hook em on a rod n reel and fight them in.
This is truth! The one im holding in the picture flailed around when i was dragging him up the shore and hit my in the shoulder shredding my shirt and leaving me with some nice teeth scrapes on the shoulder bleeding. They can live a long time out of water as well.
All white meat. They are a small pain to get the plating split. But once you know how to do it then it doesnt take long. We make gar balls primarily with them. The texture is a bit like veal so they hold up nicely to any type of cooking method.
My favorite for inshore fighting is trying to land an alligator gar. 5ft plus well over 80 lbs of muscle and armor plating! The last one i pulled in broke the shaft of my reel so I had to do it by hand with a helper. Line sliced through 2 fingers clean but I still got him out the water!

3mm is a tight fit IMO it works 2.5 i like better in it. I just think there are much better options available at this point from when the subtank mini was released. If you can pick one up cheap go for it. It works for an on the go tank. It never really leaks and provides a more than half decent...
The subtank mini is going to limit your builds. Its basically standard single coil at 2.5 or smaller the chamber/chimney setup is tiny for anything fancy.
