*GEM: A new RTA by MarkBugs

So I picked up an EHPro Squape clone for $20 to compare with the Gem. I know, it's a clone, bad me, but functionally it's the pretty much the same and if I'm going to spend $$$ on an atomizer, I'll get another Gem. Also, I just wanted to compare the two tanks given certain similarities. From...

    DNA40 vs SX350j

Nope, but threads always evolve. Thus we've discussed here advantageous features beyond the DNA40 and SX350J, of which bluetooth and other advances (e.g., thermocouples) have come up. But hey, if you want to argue banning all discussion of the DNA200 because it doesn't fit the title of the...

    DNA40 vs SX350j

Ah, I see you are the arbiter of all that is relevant or not. However, if people discussing advantages of a technology that Evolv didn't implement upsets you maybe you should leave the thread. Sort of like you say, "Get over it. Participate or don't."

    DNA40 vs SX350j

Says the guy who likes to use the word "fluff" or "unnecessary" whenever someone points out features lacking in an Evolv product. Nice double standard you got there. It would be better if upgrades can be done through bluetooth, but it's also not the same as controlling the chip's setting. Quite...

Is this a better approach to vaporizing e-liquid?

Most patents include up to 20 claims (after that you have to pay higher filing fees for more), but what matters is the independent claims of which there are typically three. All of them are directed to the same thing, as shown by independent claim 1. Claim 1: An electronic cigarette...

    DNA40 vs SX350j

The point I made is to change those settings, one has to be tethered to the PC. I didn't say that the DNA200 always has to be tethered to the PC to function. For consumer-friendly devices, bluetooth is the way to go. The salesperson who tries to pitch a USB tether for a PC interface to most...

    SXmini M Class (TEMP CONTROL)

Nope. Battery capacity decreases as current draw increases. Most batteries provide their advertised capacities at a low C-rate. For example, the HE4 is given at 0.2 C, which means (2500 mAh)*0.2C = 500 mA. At it's max continuous discharge rating, on the LG HE4 you'll see around a 10~15%...

Is this a better approach to vaporizing e-liquid?

You're likely misunderstanding the patent application. The only thing that is being claimed here is a new heating system, as shown in the patent claims. All the elements must be present for a device to infringe if these claims are allowed (which isn't a given - the USPTO may cause the applicant...

Is this a better approach to vaporizing e-liquid?

Lik Hon is often called the inventor of the modern electric cigarette, so he is sort of the guy to beat when it comes to patent rights. Otherwise, patents are what they are. In return for a shot at a limited monopoly, companies have to disclose their trade secrets. We might not always like...

Is this a better approach to vaporizing e-liquid?

Lik Hon has a recent patent describing a piezoceramic element, but it's to improve on the heating element, not to replace it. Patent US8899239 - Electronic cigarette - Google Patents "The effect of the ultrasonic piezoelectric element 20 mounting on the nozzle is that, firstly, the large...

Is this a better approach to vaporizing e-liquid?

Perhaps, but just because a patent describes something in the context of a cigalike doesn't mean that feature won't be useful elsewhere. TC, for example, was described in patent literature with respect to cigalikes well before the DNA40, SX350J, etc. As much as we might dislike them, cigalike...

Is this a better approach to vaporizing e-liquid?

A cigalike might be the preferred embodiment described in the patent, but that does not mean the claimed invention is limited to a cigalike.

Is this a better approach to vaporizing e-liquid?

It looks like the specific heat of PG/VG would be max 2.5 kJ/kg-C. So if you want to heat 5mg of e-liquid to vaporization, that's (2.5)(180)(.005)=2.25J. Maybe I'm doing something wrong in the math, but that doesn't seem like an excessive amount of energy required.

Is this a better approach to vaporizing e-liquid?

Well, keep in mind that the current method wastes at least 95% of its energy in just heating a wick. Here, you only need to heat up a much smaller amount of e-liquid.

    SXmini M Class (TEMP CONTROL)

There's one set of firmware upgrades for the SX Mini and another for the SX350J stand-alone chip. I'm not sure if there are any differences between them other than the bootup screen.

Yep, but your reply is still unclear as to what you're disagreeing with.

Nice of you to quote me out of context. Now how about trying that again, this time with what I said in context? ;)

Is this a better approach to vaporizing e-liquid?

The idea here isn't to boil a whole pot of e-liquid, but to heat a thin tissue of e-liquid. ;)

Is this a better approach to vaporizing e-liquid?

Below is shown an invention claimed by Lik Hon in U.S. Pat. Pub. No. 2015/0034103. Unlike most e-cigs, where the wick is in contact with the coil, he presents a different approach. When a user inhales at the nozzle (42), air is drawn through a heating coil (40). The air is heated (e.g., to 500...
