The eGo twist is probably the best way to go for a newbie. The threads work with almost everything out there, and most people agree they are worth having, even in an advanced vaper's collection. If you are looking for a kit, try Valley View Vapes - they have a nice twist starter package going...
I agree, any eGo is the way to go for a beginner. The bright side is almost anything works with them, so you won't have regrets later - you'll always be able to make use of it. The twist is probably the best to start with, as you'll want it anyway sooner or later.
You're not going crazy with cash, you're getting a proper setup going. It takes some money at first (say 3 or 4 cartons of cigs money) to get to where you feel comfortable. Don't worry about it. Soon enough you'll have it down and only spend hard-earned cash on juice.
