Batteries are typically rated between 250-300 recharges, though they will loose some of their capacity before the end.
A VV eGo-twist or Spinner would be a fine addition to your collection and would work fine with an eVod - as would any passthrough that has an eGo connection.
It's not the same as silica. Cotton will burn if it is not kept saturated. But it will work well, just make sure it is 100% cotton and boil it about 30 minutes then let dry before using it - in case there is any crud in it.
It is all a confusing mess. Silica and mesh and wire rope and ceramic and fish filters and what all may be fine, but rather than a headache I decided to just use cotton. It works well, it's cheap, and easy to use, and it's the safest material I know of.
Kill two birds with one stone: You can "aquire" many useful vape supplies at the dentist's - tools, cotton balls, floss, latex gloves, toothbrushes, drills… ;)
I remember that, I think the conclusion of that thread was that these wicks are made of a kind of stretched silica which cannot break down into small enough particles to enter the lungs - but they can give you a scratchy throat.
I switched to cotton.
100% cotton is what you want. Some "cottony" things may have synthetic fibers mixed in. You can burn a swatch to make sure. If you get ashes = good. If you get black goop = bad. And boiling is good.
It takes a little experience, but generally if it tastes bad it's time to clean your wick and coil.
Silica wicks can last upwards of a month depending on your juice and how often you clean them. Once your silica starts to fray and come apart its time to replace it.
