Trial and error. I know now about how much to pull off the batch, then roll it between my palms until it compresses to a size that looks right. I guess about one and a half times the size of the coil.
My wife has a gunky chocolate that was going about 3 days. I increased the diameter of the coil and now it is about a week. Same 30 gauge and around 2 ohms. Might try that.
This week STM RBA build is on a 2.4mm screwdriver, 28ga, 6 wraps, shows 1.1 ohms on the KBM. I used a bit heftier wick, under the high lead, around and over the low lead, then around and over the high lead. This left tails on both sides of the deck that I trimmed to meet the cap holes. Ran it...
That taste and sore throat is from the juice burning on the coil from not enough flow or the wick losing contact with the coil. I haven't used protanks in a while but seems that I used a 1/16" mandrel. You have to get the rayon tighter in the coil than you would with cotton. I somewhat shrinks...

I have the 1.2 and 1.5 vertical coils and run them and 16 watts with medium air flow.
7 watts is ok for a device with limited air flow and around 2 ohm coils.
I quit vaping the first time too. Quit cold turkey later and after 6 months went right back to 2PAD. 2 years vaping this time. Good luck to you with that nice little device.
