Are you 100% positive that there is nothing blocking the airway in the pin? One time a while back I put too much vaseline on the bottom oring and some vaseline got inside the bottom of the pin when I put the oring back on and blocked air going up.
For those of us who don't have a kiln, the next best thing is a torch. A regular lighter won't be able to do the job. Just torch a small section at a time and you'll know that it's done when the bright red glow of the wick turns to white-ish color glow. Don't be afraid of overdoing it, you can't...

Yes, you can torch it and reuse it a few times if you need to. OTOH, if you try Mr. Krinkle's method, you will end up using a very small amount of wick for every coil and $2.25 per foot of nextel will seem negligible. Just my thoughts...
