i haven't tried it yet myself, but the pyrex glass tube wick sounds pretty interesting (i think, it's worth to try it with silica or cotton):

before i definitely installed the wick, i additionally added another layer of mesh before because of the fat coil it was too thin.
i wrapped the loose ends of the silica wick around the poles in double P-shape and cut them.
on kicked Reo Grand at 10 W vapes quite ok, i guess next...

as i have a couple of mesh-RBA's, i found a way to reuse wicks from them. i therefore cut a piece from the tank part of the used mesh in the size of 10 x (A) mm. (A) varies from 15 - 20 mm. i then take silica rope, in this example it's a thin one. i wrap the prerolled...

so far i made out my maximum mesh size by 80mm (this is for the Orion2.1). i do have an atty that takes a 100mm mesh rolled, but for me it does not bring more pleasure then e.g. 70mm mesh ...
not so much depending from the size, it's really worthy to take your time to roll the mesh. i am not...
burnt taste comes from hotspots of the coil. to avoid you have to fiddle on the coil e.g. with a needle, or sometimes you can move the mesh roll a bit up and down or turn it slightly against the direction, the roll is turned ...
