    Steam Engine and Clapton Coils

Steam Engine has a new program called "wire wizard", that includes claptons.

Airflow controllers, heat sinks, saving your threads

Not an intermediary, semi-disposable device... but rather a highly conductive, silver based, grease type lubricant. A small dab on a Q-tip, burnished onto the 510 thread, can last for weeks. MG Conductive Grease. I get mine from the vendor linked... but you can probably get it cheaper on...

    Coils Question

Click the first sigline hyperlink below. Using the coil modeling program, Steam Engine, will provide you with the necessary knowledge to mock-up and understand the characteristics of practically any coil build, including optimization for wattage applied.

    newbie mech mod question.

Click on my first sigline hyperlink. If you already have your head wrapped around Ohm's law, then learning how to use Steam Engine to it's fullest will complete your unregulated vaping education. ;)

    newbie mech mod question.

Wattage/amperage is determined by the net resistance and the relative constant of a charged battery voltage... easily calculated with Ohm's law. For example, with a fully charged 18650 battery at 4.2 volts, a net resistance of 0.5Ω will produce a discharge of 35 watts and 8 amps... rounded off...

    RDA clone atties quality

RDAs are pretty simple... at least they are to people with mechanical and electrical backgrounds. I tend to buy a mix of about 65% authentic, 35% clone... with the latter almost always from FT. I can "get away" this because my neighbor has bought practically every clone RDA FT has carried... he...

A ride in the Wayback Machine, the ecig news of 2010

I don't know nicnik... I take a lot of meds, and go off on tangents sometimes. Regardless... still felt pretty good, considering I didn't drill down, or use foul language. o_O

A ride in the Wayback Machine, the ecig news of 2010

Bearing in mind that this is my personal opinion, and my comments are of a general nature rather than drilling down into a specific subset... lets open the flood gates. Some of that perceived nastiness comes from the various stages and knowledge levels of vaping - in particular, the egos that...

    Efest Purple 30A 2100mAh 18650 Bench Test Results...only a 20A battery

Not to give you a big head or anything ... but I believe that your published testing has had a dramatic effect. Not just on knowledgeable ECF members... but well beyond that, to vendors, wholesalers and vape market "re-labelers" as well. I doubt you would admit your contributions, or even take...

    Efest Purple 30A 2100mAh 18650 Bench Test Results...only a 20A battery

This may have been mentioned somewhere in ECF before... but it's new to me. As we're chatting about Efest... I picked up a few Efest "purple" 18650/2500mAh for dirt cheap (yes, they're "genuine") and it appears they've adjusting their labeling. No longer is there a prominent amp rate... as seen...

    anything smaller?

You could also consider using an unregulated, tube type mech mod... along with gathering a good understanding of Ohm's law, mech battery safety and optimizing build specifics for calculated Ohm's law wattage discharge values. One of the "features" of regulated mods is a constant output right up...

    Is this true?

Yep - no problem. See... it's the lower resistance's coils added mass that requires nearly three times the current for nearly the same heat flux.

    Efest 38A 2100mAh 18650 Bench Test Results...an ok 20A cell, no higher

Yeah, yeah, yeah... don't let it go to your head. Back to work! ;)

    Is this true?

No. Click the advanced button on Steam Engine and see which one has the most coil surface area. That will be the one vaporizing the greatest amount of juice for a given draw. Wanna' bet which one it will be? ;)

    Efest 38A 2100mAh 18650 Bench Test Results...an ok 20A cell, no higher

This "phenomena" seems to have only shown it's ugly face in the past 12-16 months. All the advertised ratings are attainable... but not as continuous (that key descriptive frequently dropped from the rating) and certainly not as safe... and this is where the purposely and knowingly promoted BS...

Time to re-order Kanthal ... gauge?

 Thanks very much for the kind words,Tony. I certainly didn't invent Steam Engine - I just tried to explain the "inner workings" in more easily digestible terms - and it ended up being several thousands of words on the subject. Now, after having expended a good bit of time and effort in...

Time to re-order Kanthal ... gauge?

The 28 gauge @thetrucker offers might be a good "next step" for you, @Johntodd. Everything from mild sub-ohm to around 1.4Ω is adequately supported in a 30-40 watt range. 27 & 26 would be your next option... should you choose to go with mid to mild sub-ohm, at higher wattage. I would suggest...

Time to re-order Kanthal ... gauge?

I don't understand. You say what you have... not what you want. There are optimal wire gauge/resistance value/coil count in parallel for every wattage range... and visa versa. Do you intend to not go above 25 watts? If not, then your self-imposed limits also restrict an optimal wire gauge...

I have 2 pairs of 18650 batteries...one of each pair now takes FOREVER to charge. why?

Assuming identical cell quality... If you're installing these batteries in dual cell mods, and for some unknown reason the chance of each battery going into the same sled side is better than 50/50, and... (always more "ands") one side of the cell sled has substantially better conductivity than...

    the "science" behind different coils

Unless you have a method, fixture and gauges for consistently measuring air flow in inches of water, you're going to have difficulty comparing objectively. You can go by the number and size of air inlets and outlets... do the math with a constant and arrive at a value... but then that value is...
