    The short battery has a capacity of 280mah's. The long battery has a capacity of 380ma's. So you can do the math and figure the longer battery will last longer before it needs recharging.

    The most the passthrough can draw is around 1.7 amps at 5 volts. I know many are pushing them to their limits. You will be ok as long as the USB port has a rating of at least 1 amp. It could be lower. So try it and see what happens...:)
