    Your going to have one wick constantly drying out before the other one, which will lead to a burnt wick as you vape it and cant taste it so much, until its very dry. This why matched is best, they burn juice at the same rate and dry out at the same rate. BOL.

    Here you go. This is after a couple pulses to dry burn it and nothing more. More often then not I don`t even rinse them, just dry burn and rewick. Maybe there is something in your water that is coating them? BOL.

    That looks like gunk. Try scrubbing with a toothbrush gently under running water. Dry burn again, then again with the tooth brush if not clean. They should be a dull blue-black metallic color when cleaned properly.
