    I always thought aw icr10440's were protected but will have to wait for confirmation on that. The imr 10440(the other blue ones that are not aw) are a safer chemistry so traditional protection is not used since they will not vent with flames.     It sure sounds like your adapter is shorted out, I know I have only had a Darwin for a few days but I have had plenty of experience with stupid adapters. They are not hard to mess up and it is definitely a good idea to swap them out every couple months imo.
