my fill hole doesnt leak. I have 3 of them and mainly use them on the go because of the fill plug. maybe you could try it out before you spend money on thumb screws. also, i dont have the best eyesight anymore but i dont think its threaded. mine look smooth inside.

Just to add to the suggestions already posted. Dont just add juice as soon as you dont see hot spots. keep pulsing for a while. take your time. Especially since you more than likely dont really know what to look for yet. Let the coils change color. They will turn brown with a greenish hue. well...

You have a short. Sometimes after you pulse it, you have to move the coil just a bit. After that, it should glow normally. I like to start fully unoxidized. It helps you to see the oxidizing process better.
