FDA FDA e-cig workshop starts 8AM (Eastern US time) on Dec 10, agenda stacked with staff from FDA and other federal agencies and many ANTZ

carlvphillips: I am glad that you and I found common ground on the Talih et al (in press) paper. I appreciate that you and I are unlikely to agree on a variety of issues of ethics and also am not comfortable with a philosophical discussion on an open internet forum where intended meanings can...

FDA FDA e-cig workshop starts 8AM (Eastern US time) on Dec 10, agenda stacked with staff from FDA and other federal agencies and many ANTZ

carlvphillips: once again I seem to have communicated badly. When I write the words "I don't think it matters one whit what I think smokers want, or what vapers want...." the emphasis is on the word "think" (the SECOND "think". Ok, that was confusing). I am VERY interested in what people...

FDA FDA e-cig workshop starts 8AM (Eastern US time) on Dec 10, agenda stacked with staff from FDA and other federal agencies and many ANTZ

My second slide made quite clear that the work of Dr. Shihadeh and I is funded by NIH/FDA. The grant you refer to ended in 2011. It concerned tobacco smoking with a waterpipe: good work was accomplished. Why is that several-years-defunct waterpipe grant relevant to today's workshop?

FDA FDA e-cig workshop starts 8AM (Eastern US time) on Dec 10, agenda stacked with staff from FDA and other federal agencies and many ANTZ

I don't think it matters one whit what I think smokers want, or what vapers want. These are empirical issues that are best settled with data, not my opinions. I suggested in my talk that there was the potential for a sweet spot where we could find a nicotine flux that was satisfying for...

FDA FDA e-cig workshop starts 8AM (Eastern US time) on Dec 10, agenda stacked with staff from FDA and other federal agencies and many ANTZ

"we" referred to Dr. Shihadeh and me. I thought I said that. Sorry if I did not. I do not speak for vapors. I do not speak for anyone except those who, as Dr. Shihadeh did in this instance, give me permission to do so.

FDA FDA e-cig workshop starts 8AM (Eastern US time) on Dec 10, agenda stacked with staff from FDA and other federal agencies and many ANTZ

carlvphillips: with respect to your quibble below, which concerns a remark I made in the question period, what I believe I said was that what we are looking for is a product that satisfies the tobacco cigarette smoker but does not pleasure the non-smoker. That, in rather casual terms, is the...

    Wallstreet journal article

I don't want to start any arguments when I say that Ploom is not a rumor and the product is definitely on the market. I am holding one in my hand right...now. I have not yet done any research on them other than to have one here for casual study.

Editor of journal Tobacco Control refuses to discuss the issues

First, I think you mean "c r e t i n ", unless you think I am from the island of Crete? Second, Emily Post agrees with me: "Socially as well as professionally, medical doctors, dentists, and other professionals are addressed by, and introduced with, their titles. People who have earned a Ph.D...

Editor of journal Tobacco Control refuses to discuss the issues

    | UCSF School of Nursing There is a long history of women in science being referred to without their titles while men frequently get their titles included. I think we need to be particularly careful in this regard.

    Here's a shocker! There's nicotine in them-thar e-ciggy thingies!

Elaine: I don't think an explanation is necessary. The time period between online and print publication does not seem unusual for this or any other journal with which I am familiar.

    Here's a shocker! There's nicotine in them-thar e-ciggy thingies!

DC2: On October 2, 2012 and at your request I sent an electronic copy of this paper and another that shows that ecigs deliver nicotine to an e-mail address that you provided. Did you never receive these papers?

Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates and CASAA confront FDA and its TPSAC about risks of different tobacco/nicotine products

Neither FDA nor TPSAC can alter smokeless tobacco labeling, which is mandated by congress (see below, excerpted from FSPTCA). If you want changes in the labeling, railing at FDA or TPSAC serves no useful purpose. A constructive approach might be to lobby congress. ‘SEC. 3. SMOKELESS TOBACCO...

    New Vansickel/Weaver/Eissenberg study on e-cigarettes

For the record, I have never conducted a "press conference" in my life, at least as I understand the term "press conference" (e.g., "a media event in which newsmakers invite journalists to hear them speak and, most often, ask questions."). I got that quotation from wikipedia, the first hit when...

“Study finds e-cigarettes affect airways, and quickly”

Tom09: The text of your question highlights the fact that my expertise is in measures OTHER than pulmonary function, so rather than focus on that issue, I'd like to address two other points about the Vardavas et al (2011) paper. First, with regard to experimental design, there is in my mind...

“Study finds e-cigarettes affect airways, and quickly”

This statement is false. The study was not "redone by the same researcher" who then reached "the opposite conclusion". I stand by the results reported in the Eissenberg (2010) Tobacco Control letter and the Vansickel et al (2010) CEBP paper, keeping in mind, of course, that (as noted in...

Laboratory study needs experienced electronic cigarette users

Elaine: Below I have reprinted the entire discussion section of the TC letter. Can you please tell me where I said that ECIGs would be "unlikely to be helpful in quitting smoking"? Tom E. PS: A short report describing the current "experienced users" study has been revised to address...
