When it comes to batts, better don't rely on luck... May be off-topic, but the batts in my china-tablet went kaboom a couple of months back. Not going to be a pretty sight, if the same happens to the batts in your PV.

Havn't tried, but I don't get how does it wick. Do you still tilt? If so, I'm guess the braiding helps to 'guide' the juice flow.
