Had a customer ask for a free hand Zulu Springfield pipe. Plan on making more free hands as I get time. Like all Springfields the atty is in the stem and the pipe comes on when you put it in your mouth. Enjoy the pictures.
The first bent stem, silver tipped Springfield. More then likely, this will be my last thread on ECF. If you would like to see more of the Springfield's on going builds and projects, come see us on the ePipe Forum.
To finish up this thread is the new bowl. All the bowls start as a blank with a hole in it. It goes on a CNC router and is shaped out. Then all the finish work goes into it. It took four trys to get a bowl I liked. You can see the three silver tips in the last photo.
With the insert done, one can cast the stem. You can see how the insert fits into the stem. The plastic is casted around in. The beauty ring helps hide the o-ring and strengthen the part. Like all the Springfield parts, it's made to last.
Moving onto the stem. There is a stainless steel insert that goes into the stem of a Springfield. It has two slots on each side so you can push it on. Then turn it 1/8 turn and hear it click into place. This part is first turned on the lathe with a knurl on the outside so the plastic has...
The battery holder is done. It takes 32 parts to put the battery holder together. Most of that is molded into plastic to make it water tight and easier to replace. You can see the two contact post on top of the holder and the positive tab for the battery. Also the battery spring has a large...
Doing the battery holder is like doing jewelry. Very small pieces being heated to slight orange. Had to drag out my jewelers torch. Made the contact post out of brass but, made them short by .062. Then silver soldered the silver plate to the top of the .125 post. Put it in the lathe to trim...
It's time to start this thread. Bent stem Springfield's with all silver/germaniun alloy contacts and gold wire connections. I already use gold wire connections on my pipes because I only have one connection. The center pin on the 510 has always been silver/ germanium alloy as well. Now all...
After all that, you end up with a Springfield Pipe. As it has been said, it's just a pipe. Hope you enjoyed my one year recap. Springfields go for $300.00 US plus shipping. I never ask for any money until your pipe is ready to ship and you are happy with the bowl shade. I use PayPal only. If...
How hard can it be to make a battery cap you ask. One of the hardest parts of this build. I made them out of metal and screwed them in. Made some out of rubber like a plug. Finally I made them out of plastic. Tried to make some that glowed red when you pulled on it. That made it look like...
Next was the stems. Very little change over the year. Started out that just the CE5 would fit in the stem. Went to a larger dia stem to handle the Protank and many others. The hardest part of the stem is to get a .025 wire centered in the wall of the stem, that is only .050 thick. Then run...
Need to finish this. The bowls have gone through some changes over the year. Started out with a straight tall style. This was because I was doing them by hand. Now I do them with a CNC router and can round them out to look more like a pipe. The last change I made was to make the bowl taller...
Next step was to come up with a EGO connector that the stem could mate too. Using the bayonet connection seemed to be the way to go. Didn't want to screw it on or push it on so, that is what was left. To start with was a fixed contact point and EGO 12mm x .5mm threads.
It worked...
One little thing you can't see but really helps is, there's about .050 of lead-in hole on both post in the battery holder. Being 2-56 screws, it's hard for these big fingers to get in there and hold them center so you can start to turn them. Add a wire connector and positive tab make it even...
