im replying before i read what everone else said, but a mod that can take a rough day is the K100 or k101. ive taken it through some rough tests, by mistake, and it still works amazing!

Also, most times local shops might be a tad more expensive that stuff online due to convenience. I'd happily pay a few more bucks if it means I don't have to wait for stupid shipping.

Making your own juice is risky in my opinion. Maybe it's me but I found that getting the right ratio of nic and stuff is difficult. There is a website that can calculate it for you but I never had any luck. Check out gotsmok.com and vaporjoes for deals on gear.
