Without a short, the 14500 battery absolutely should not fry an atomizer. You are sure the atty is fried? Sometimes it can be tricky getting the atty to connect with the positive part of the connector. Another common problem is picking up the wrong switch at RS and getting one that works...

That isn't enough battery power to keep up with an atomizer:(. At best, you have a smidge over 3 volts there. You might get a wisp of vapor with that, but nothing satisfying;).

They sell chargers for NiMH also that charge in your car's cigarette lighter. You may want to have one of those on hand for your doomsday back up kit.
