I think the cleaning cycle can be a good thing. If and only if you happen to have enough liquid in there at the time to keep it from frying dry. A manual cycle would be the way to go.
Even with regular cleaning there is a point where you have to retire a sickly atomiser. Problem is it can degrade so slowly you might not notice it much until you do replace it. Then you wonder why you put up with it for so long.
