man, that first shock will make you jump! LOL
Apparently I got it all wired up right though. Charging and holding steady at 35v :D
Just need to go through and solder up some of these twist connections.......then continue to wait for my kanthal to be delivered :glare:
It's been a week today and...
lol yeah, that's the same one I ordered as well
same reason, I won't use it enough to justify a 'better' one. It'll be lucky if it sees more than a couple uses a year, I don't need anything more expensive or fancier
that's why I limited my sources to more reputable places than wikipedia LOL
I think you're right, that vaping off any of these is most likely safe enough....but since we're talking about arc welding these wires it seemed relevant to look at vapors produces while melting them. Sure, it's small...
Yup.
Cancer risk of arc welders exposed to fumes containing chromium and nickel - US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health
Chromium and Nickel in Welding Fume, Safety and Health
Fact Sheet No. 4 - American Welding Society
I tried searching for similar info on silver and...
that's what I've heard too, about nickel and copper.....but I didn't have the sources in front of me any more and didn't feel like digging for them again
LOL don't base too much around my failure/success. I haven't even received the parts to make the welder yet, so I'm about as far from experienced as one can get
Ummmm.....I thought I understood the purpose being for making 'legs' for the coil that won't heat up and burn the rubber plug in the...
just thought I'd share this here.....with the discussions about "why use silver when nickel is so cheap?"
Well, I haven't tried either yet, but I ordered silver because I had read a couple things about it being safer than nickel.
All the links I found here pointed to places that were about $20...
and the brushes, don't forget the brushes! they've been my real achille's heel lately, after getting bored with my home made strops projects LOL
we may be getting off topic though LOL You can find me under the same user name over on shavenook.com if you wanna chat about that stuff :toast:
yup :)
I should've doubled up my order for the Digi-Key parts, but I've spent waaaayyyy too much on 'hobbies' lately.....between the vaping and all its accessories, the straight shaving and all the 'acquisition disorders' that accompany that, and the 3 moderately to heavily modified subarus in...
I bought this one: 2x LM2577 3A DC Step-Up Adjustable Breadboard Module; Power Supply Converter USA
Someone linked to it earlier in the thread, and for $10 I get one to do right after screwing up the first one LOL
Doesn't hurt that it's delivered from just a few hours away from me
Okay, just finished reading through the other thread. Good stuff, but honestly, most of it has already been copied over into this thread lol
And it's all about the camera method, parts already ordered for the LM2577 build. Thanks anyway though :)
Yes, that is one of the many browser tabs I have open here, thanks :)
I guess for my first try I'll just follow that one and ignore all the other fancy ones with the extra bells, whistles, lights and displays. KISS, and all that :thumb:
Okay, I guess I goofed more than I thought. I swear I knew that though, that was embarrassing haha
I just placed the order for the board on ebay, I'll order the stuff from Digi-key and read through this all again before it arrives
Okay, I've read through the whole thread.....and am thoroughly confused LOL
I understand the concepts, and I think I have it down for the most part, I just keep getting mixed up when the thread keeps jumping back and forth between all the different versions people have come up with
I was...
Yeah, I didn't expect it to make any difference resistance-wise...I was wondering more about the physical connection. I suppose it shouldn't make much difference though if I'm soldering them together. I just like to overthink things LOL
what the hell, at that price it's worth trying either...
Going to try my hand at wrapping my own coils, just wanted to get some clarification before I place the order
I'm looking at the 33awg Kanthal A-1 here:
Kanthal Wire 33 Gauge RW0086 - 100 FT 0.19oz Series A-1 Resistance AWG
$9.61 for 100' with free shipping
And the cheapest source I found for...
yeah, all of mine eventually end up burning through and pulling apart after a couple cleanings, regardless of what 'they' say about this stuff
I'm starting to look into the whole homespun coils and cotton/bamboo wicks. I pulled apart a new head and replaced the wick in the stock coil with...
They definitely seem burnt. In a couple cases they actually broke into 2 pieces. Both pieces look nice and clean up until the broken ends....at the very end, just about the last millimeter fades very quickly from clean to a dark brownish-black, then to an ashy grey at the broken tips...
