No, I think the taper or curve of the chimney/bell closes the gap. I think the basic design is sound as mine works great. I can't speak with authority on yours but if you are getting excess air in there I suspect yours is misaligned/broken.

No issues at all so far, apart from not being able to put it down. I like an airy MTL vape (I use the Ares and Zenith wide open too). I just now tested the sealing by closing all the airholes, and I couldn't pull any air at all, so I'm pretty sure mine is just fine.
