Yeah I wouldn't try holding a battery powered on for that long...something is guaranteed to fail. I understand (I think) why they did it that way. For studies with smokes, they lit it, and burnt the entire thing to be analyzed. Figure out tar, nic, etc etc per smoke. It's just not the same...
