I use cartomizers so how do you do this with out ruining it?

Just read someones post about cleaning cartos, by running them under water then letting them dry. Wouldn't that hurt the atomizer? Do you have to dip in pga after? I don't have any and don't want to keep it in the house with kids. I really don't want to have vodka either. Thanks!
