Pulling the posts deffinately sounds like the place to start. If there's a short, either on the batt or carto/atty side (usually caused by over tightening and the center pin + being pushed into the threading -) the pcb in the battery will go into protected mode. If the batts seem to operate fine...

Various vendors sell sweatner, such as Tasty Vapor. I'd suggest testing with a small amount first(say 3ml) just so you can get it right, to your taste that is. :D
