I've found that if it's burnt, you'll get that taste immediately. If you take off the mouth piece white rubbery band thing :P you'll see the white fluff, you might see a big of burnt fluff..that's my experience though and I'm still a noob. If you want to risk a cartomizer go ahead and take it...

On a few of them I have gotten little bits of liquid. I know that's an overfill for sure :) I'll try cleaning them again, I'm using hot water and letting them sit for about an hour or two..I'll try longer this time :P It's not the technique I'm using to refill is it?
