I don't know how you got a plastic part in the top...they must've added that in the later editions.
Here is where you should try the Teflon tape: from the heat shrink to the top of the nut.

I agree that it has its design flaws, and seemed a bit rushed.
Have you tried putting white Teflon tape around the top part of the center post where the plastic/o-ring meets it and the deck?

I've got both an anodized version and non anodized, and any time I've had a leaking issue, a little adjustment to the top nut on the deck while pushing the pin from the bottom, has fixed my issue.

It tells you how to set it up with different mediums (ie. Mesh/silica).
I strayed and had issues with either flooding or dry hits. The key with this device is to get those holes filled up with mesh/silica just right.

The Kayfun is well worth the $. You can set it up with mesh/silica or even Xc116 ceramic. The Taifun GT is also well worth the money, I've got mine setup on 100mmx30mm mesh and is vaping like champ.
Kayfuns are usually readily available over at VapeRev. Taifuns are a different story.

My guess... your coil is burning the juice quicker than the wick can supply it and/or you may have hot legs or portions of the coil not in contact with the wick. :)
