The Ego is an excellent first choice. I would suggest that you buy a starter kit, and try to get passthru batteries in your kit if that option is available to you.

I don't think you will have a problem. There was one guy in Florida who overcharged his battery and it exploded, but the police determined that he was tampering with the battery. If you don't deviate from normal use, and don't screw with the internal workings of the battery you should be fine...
