My box mod was done with a 2v 80ma green 5mm LED and a 470ohm resistor from radio shack... the instructions I had were to use a 500ohm, but the Shack didn't have any. 55ohm may not be enough for your LEDs.

Aquarium Silicone is ok for sealing your electrical connections, but not for bonding pieces. If you're having issues with super/krazy/instant glue, you need to sand the surfaces to be glued a little just to rough it up, before gluing the parts together. Modeling glue I think is the best for...
