My method with Koh Gen Do: Give it nice open 2-3mm coil loops, and make the wick short with puffy shoulders, lose the wick ring and AFC ring altogether, wet the wick, close everything up, fill tank, vape until empty. No leaking, no dry hits, just warm yummy vapor.

With my unflavored menthol(4%), I can get about 50mL before I need to rewick, but that's no actual flavorings, no sweeteners of any kind. When I remove the wick there is no gunk at all, but after about 50mL it starts tasting kinda "worn out". I'd have to agree no one that can properly taste...
