Ok, so what do you think led to someone trying this? Oh hey, bet I can pull back and stall this thing in nothing flat and instantly recover......Hold my beer!

I did something similar with an RC plane 35 years ago and had to dig the engine out of the ground after it lawn darted.

the sun and the camera are conspiring to create white lines (look like dusty cracks) in some of these pics.

what can I say? it just doesn't look like that in real life (sun or no sun)

only the full-sun pics are showing the colors tho. [shrugs]

I think it's a mile-high club thing.
A "moment", if you will.

You need thrust vectoring to pull this off Mundy (hence why your R/C plane became a lawn dart). It's called a Cobra turn

and here is how that aircraft vectors it's thrust

and here is our much sexier F22 Raptor

Yes, but what made someone think to try this? Some engineer got a wild hair and did a computer simulation and thought "I bet one of those test pilots will lap this up". Then someone had to give the go ahead to risk a pilot and a very expensive plane.

probably along the lines of combat and necessity

Well since it's a game of cat and mouse or "dogfight" as it's called I guess the one who's got the most maneuverability wins. Now I'm sure the engineers are thrilled to get them boys up front sucking up even more G's.

The Cobra maneuver was first done by the Russkies but a similar maneuver was done before the thrust vectoring days with good ol' fashioned airbrakes. Slam on the airbrakes and the other guy goes speeding by and suddenly you're behind him. The Cobra wasn't really ever applied in combat situations because it leaves the aircraft at a very high angle of attack (so the pilot can't fire at the opponent since he's pointed skywards). It's always been more of a trick maneuver for aerial displays
