I was kind suspecting that given, that it faces the Southern Ocean.

No wonder you don't go swimming. ;)

I wouldn't either. I'll stick with this:

And I have this
Average Ocean Temperatures for the Texas Gulf Coast
The water temperature usually reaches 86 °F (30 °C) at the Galveston Pleasure Pier in July and August. The Gulf of Mexico's coolest water of the year along the Texas coast arrives in January, when the temperature drops to 53 °F (12 °C) at Freeport.

I'm surprised it gets cooler there than here.

Mid June to late September look like weather I would enjoy for swimming. Dry land would be muggy, oppressive with the high temps and humidity. Everyone searches for paradise, most of us settle for second best.

From a weather perspective, we did indeed prefer Hawaii. But ya can't drive to Hawaii, and the cost of everything there is far higher than here.

yeah

queensland has tropical beaches
new south wales reportedly has good surf

people tend to visit my state for the coffee/food/events

we have some big stadiums and galleries and the likes

west of the city is pretty, but also not great swimming

We really love the Virgin Islands for the same reason. But, cost of living is low and people are amazing. We're planning retirement there.

Queensland sounds great until you realize there are more things that can kill you than not.
